After the game ended in a 1-1 draw, the teams went to a shootout to determine the winner. The goalie made two clutch saves to win the game. Here, the goalie’s teammates rush to celebrate the win. The goalie is my son, so I just gotta brag.

I really don’t understand how can soccer be such a popular sport with kids in the US but somehow vanishes with the adult public.

Because once you get in high school, you are ‘lame’ if you’re a soccer player. So they all go to football.

Because it’s fun to play but relatively boring to watch? My son loves to play, but quickly gets bored watching a game on TV, even if it’s his favorite team.

I guess it makes some sense, I don’t like watching soccer myself (or any sport other than racing) but it is pretty big here in Brazil and Europe.

Man growing up always playing sports was a really fun time.

One of my friends in high school was a really good goalie, wasn’t the smartest but was still heavily recruited by Harvard. He visited the school and decided “it wasn’t my style”.

High level soccer is soooo slow. Baseball is the same way...I can enjoy the highlights, but sitting through the whole thing is a chore.

It’s getting more popular in the US though. Big youth leagues (with select and traveling teams) didn’t really start taking off till the late 80s so it’s really a young sport in the US all things considered. The apparatus is still geared up for football and basketball (and to some degree baseball is clinging on) so the tip top athletes vector there; you know, where the money is. If head injuries keep getting the attention that they are I bet we’ll keep seeing growth in the soccer side at the expense of football.
